Presentation on the Result of Feasibility Study on Urgent Water Resources Development and Supply for Kabul Metropolitan Area
On December 3rd, 2011 an interactive technical seminar was organized on the result of the feasibility study on urgent water resources development and supply for Kabul Metropolitan Area, specifically, Kabul New city, at Serena Hotel, Kabul. The session was widely attended by more than 100 representatives from involved Afghan government representatives, international donors, national and international developing companies. The study report is prepared in 316 pages by the organizations’ Water Study Team. The Study Team selected 3 sources of water for Kabul Metropolitan Area and conducted the feasibility study on these sources. The Study Team found that Panjshir Fan Aquifer, Salang Dam and Gulbahar Dam are the sources that can satisfy the water demand of Kabul Metropolitan Area specifically Kabul New City. Eng. Ghulam Sachi Hassanzadah, Member of the Independent Board and CEO Dehsabz – Barikab City Development Authority (DCDA) thanked the friendly country of Japan for their active role in planning and implementation of Kabul New City in several phases and added, “The positive results of the study shows the launch of infrastructure implementation in the New City”. The areas of study include both; the upper and lower parts. He further added that the Kabul New City Master Plan, at first stage, is implemented in three Phases (for 1.5 million population), as such, the feasibility study on urgent water resources development and supply for the city is also conducted in three respective phases. According to the Water Study Team, the total capacity of Panjshir Fan Aquifer is 157 Million Cubic Meter/Year (MCM/Year) that can supply 52.8 MCM/Year for the Phases One and Two of the city. The Salang Dam with a capacity of 98 MCM/Year or Gulbahar Dam with capacity of 240 MCM/Year are alternatives for supplying water to the Third Phase, Stage One (52.4 MCM/Year) and Second Stage of Kabul New City Master Plan implementation. The seminar included presentations by the DCDA and JICA Study team experts on the Interim results of the feasibility study, Water Demand of Kabul New City and Water Conveyance and Transmission of Panjshir Fan Aquifer Development Project and Hydro-geological Investigation on Panjshir Fan Aquifer.
